SeQueerntial Art: CURVY

I’ve been brainstorming a queer sci-fi sex comedy webcomic for a while now. One of the earliest ideas I had was to invert the hentia “tentacle monster” trope, by introducing a sentient “monster” that the protagonist fucks consensually. As usual, I thought I was being incredibly clever and original, and should have remembered the world is full of talented people who are much smarter than me and would think of this first. One of them is the creator of the weekly webcomic CURVY.

A comic titled "responding to a 15-year-old posting on r/atheism." Panel one is a person typing and is captioned "Atheist" while panel 2 shows a person vommiting black bile all over a keyboard and says "Reddit Atheist."

In response to this (Trigger Warning: Examples of extreme misogyny).

PS: Posts of substance will resume in the new year. Wrapping up 2011 has been rough.

Kind Sir,

On receiving my AM edition of The Daily Planet,  I was greeted with an A1, above-the-fold headline proclaiming that – with excessive displays of force and beneath the twin shrouds of night and a media blackout – your police force had “evicted” the Occupy Wall Street protestors from Zucotti Park. In fact, the Planet corespondents themselves had been arrested in the process and had filed the story from a jail cell!

Bravo, sir! My hat is off!

I confess, I didn’t think you had it in you after backing down in the face of national opposition once before. [...]

New 52, Same Old Bullshit

A friend expressed surprise I haven’t commented on DC’s “New 52″ relaunch, considering the amount of sexist decisions in several of the titles. The truth is, I haven’t read a single issue.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise – because of my budget I don’t read any monthly comics titles, let along mainstream superhero stuff. My interest in superheroes is mostly due to cartoons like Batman: The Animated Series and the more recent Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. My knowledge of comics continuity is mostly retroactive: I research the history of characters and titles that catch my eye [...]

“I think it’s sweet that B&N have decided to support independent comic retailers”

- Geoffrey Brent on Twitter, in response to Barnes & Noble pulling all DC comics from their shelves after DC signed a deal with Kindle.

“At the very least, think of fisting in a sex-positive way. Even if it’s not your thing, know that for some people, it’s a sexual act that brings pleasure. Now who’d want to censor that?”

- Jiz Lee, in a blog post decrying the censorship of vaginal fisting in DVDs and Video on Demand sites, and declaring October 21 International Fisting Day. [...]

UPDATE 10/4/11: CultureXchange has been canceled.

I’m cohosting a panel at this year’s ConvergeSouth tech conference, here in Greensboro, North Carolina. The brainchild of Joe Killian and myself, CultureXchange is intended to showcase local people and projects that use new media to create community around arts and cultural events.

It’s looking like the final lineup of presenters will be:

The Mix Tape Film Festival The Acme Comics Podcast Greensboro Roller Derby

We’re part of the larger ConvergeSouth conference, but you can get tickets for just this event for $25. It all goes down October 7th, 9:30am at the NC A&T [...]

Watson & Holmes: “Wyatt” Watson

This post mentions: , , , , , |

DISCLAIMER: I am an avid fan of the Jeremy Brett/Edward Hardwicke/David Burke Sherlock Holmes films and series. That’s important to know first. When the Baker Street Irregulars come in the night to drag me away for Sins Against the Canon, let this stand as my final testament that I did it out of love. Love, and because it’s just so easy.

Watson & Holmes #1

Yes, there will be more. Sorry, Sir Doyle.

High above Earth in their satellite fortress, Batman enters the League’s conference room.

BATMAN: What’s this about? I was busy trying to perfect a Joker-proof sidekick….

SUPERMAN: Try someone old enough to shave.

WONDERWOMAN: Thanks for coming, Bruce. We’ll cut to the chase. We’ve got a new villain on our hands. The media’s dubbed them Necromnomnomicon. They apparently kill and partially devour their victims, then quote H.P. Lovecraft on the walls in the victim’s blood.

There’s nothing triggering in this post, but for future reference this is what a trigger warning on YSB looks like.

To get the blog up and running, I thought I’d post the content of my “About Me” page here, as a post, where you can comment and say hi. And also so you’ll actually see it. These are some of the things I think I am, or at least what will be relevant to this blog.
